Vitamin A and Birth Defects

Pregnant women have a lot on their mind during those nine months. They have to be concerned with setting up a nursery, getting plenty of clothes and toys and making sure the car is ready for transport. It is also important that they focus on their health and the health of the baby that they are carrying. That is why so many products are not suitable for pregnant women. Is Vitamin A one of them? There has been a lot said about Vitamin A and birth defects and it can make pregnant women nervous. Is there a connection between the two? Is Vitamin A safe for pregnant women? Like many vitamins, this one comes with a warning for pregnant women. It could, in fact, cause birth defects.

Vitamin A helps with embryonic growth. This vitamin is necessary for organs, bones, eyes and systems to develop properly during the gestational period. Skipping Vitamin A in the diet could actually be harmful to the baby rather than helpful. It also provides help with tissue repair after delivery. Needless to say, Vitamin A is a necessary part of life even for the pregnant woman. She just has to be cautious how she uses it.

The best way to eliminate the risk of birth defects from Vitamin A is to take it properly. You never want to ingest more in a day than is recommended. This means understanding what the dosage is for a pregnant woman of your age so that you can adhere to it. As long as you are taking safe quantities of the vitamin, you will not have to worry about the risks or symptoms of an overdose. Birth defects are a symptom of an overdose.

If you truly want to be on top of your Vitamin A intake so that you do not have to worry about Vitamin A and birth defects, the best way is to take supplements. This allows you to designate the dosage that you are supposed to take so that you are certain you do not have too much. Even if you are tempted to take a little more than recommended, do not do it. Foods are not a reliable way to acquire Vitamin A because they lose their potency with time, travel, processing and cooking.

Since it is a necessary vitamin for both your health and your baby’s you will want to be sure that you have just the right amount. Watch for any warning signs of overdose so that you can stop right away and you will not run into any problems.
