What is Vitamin A

With all of the current talk about vitamins and supplements, it can leave a person confused about what each vitamin is and how it can help them. If you are like most, then you have heard a lot about Vitamin A. You have likely heard that it will benefit your body, but you may not be certain as to how. In order to understand what is Vitamin A, it is important to look at not only the benefits that come with it, but also things like what deficiency looks like in your body and what problems might arise from taking too much.

There are many benefits of Vitamin A that you will see in your own body if you have enough. Like many other vitamins, this one is capable of contributing to an overall health in your system. You will find that it works as everything from an antioxidant to an anti-infection vitamin. There are multiple ways that the vitamin can benefit both your internal systems and your external body. Having the right amount of Vitamin A is not only crucial for the benefits that it can bring, but also because having a deficiency can hurt you further.

You cannot possibly understand what is Vitamin A without looking at the harm to your body from a deficiency. In order to understand if you have a deficiency you will have to know what the symptoms are. Like many others, the Vitamin A deficiency symptoms could also signify other health concerns. Whether you have one symptom or more, you want to rule out any major health issues before you decide that your problems could be resolved with vitamins. If you know that a vitamin deficiency is the culprit then you only have to increase your intake to see the symptoms disappear with time.

Of course Vitamin A overdose is possible. Many of the vitamins that you can take do not have a high risk of overdose. That is because they are water soluble and they will leave your system if they are not used. Vitamin A is fat soluble so it stays stored in the body. If you take too much then you can overdose and that could cause you significant problems. You should understand the symptoms that come with an overdose and the health problems that could result. If you believe you have too much Vitamin A in your body then you will want to stop your intake until the problem is solved.

Many people are concerned about Vitamin A and osteoporosis. New research has indicated that excessive amounts of Vitamin A may be a leading cause of osteoporosis. The best way to avoid this potential problem is to only take the recommended dosage. Remember that excess Vitamin A is stored in the body and that could cause an overdose if too much is taken. While you want the maximum benefit of the vitamin, you have to understand that it can be achieved through the correct dosage amounts.

Vitamin A is necessary not just for adults, but for infants and children as well. In fact, Vitamin A is an essential part of growth for an infant in the womb. The problem is that many have heard about the potential connection between Vitamin A and birth defects.  It has been said that too much Vitamin A has the potential to cause birth defects. Your part in assuring this isn’t the case is to understand what is Vitamin A, what you need it for and how much is the right amount to take. You do not want to take too much whether you are pregnant or not. In the proper doses, Vitamin A is quite beneficial and could give you a better overall health in your body.
